About Veuve Clicquot Champagne
Veuve Clicquot Is one of the iconic Champagne houses in France. It was started by Madame Clicquot, who was the first successful businesswoman in the world. The company crafts one of the best-blended Champagnes globally and exports it to many countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Russia, and Japan. The LVMH group owns it.
The History behind Veuve Clicquot Champagne
Phillipe Clicquot was a vineyard owner and a textile merchant who established his business in the Champagne country. He sold a lot of Champagne wines in the year 1772, along with his primary textile business. Nicolas Ponsardin was also a popular textile business owner who brought their businesses together with formal marriage.
Francois Clicquot, the son of Phillipe Clicquot, married Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, the daughter of Nicolas Ponsardin. After the marriage, Francois Clicquot became the partner in his father’s firm, and he continued to expand the wine company by selling wine bottles in Europe.
Francois died at 30 after seven years of wedding, and the young widow took over her husband’s business in 1805.
During that period, women could not be financially independent, and only widows had the freedom to run businesses. So Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin took over her husband’s business by formally entering an apprenticeship at the champagne house.
She soon launched her own company, Veuve Clicquot- Ponsardin, where Veuve refers to ‘widow’ in French. She became a successful business owner by exporting her wines to Russia during Napoleon.
Russians had a flair for drinking fine quality Champagne with high sugar content, which was the exact type of drinks made by Madame Clicquot. This made her Champagne extremely popular among the elite and became a quintessential drink for celebrations.
Madame Clicquot made many remarkable achievements apart from running the company. She was the first businesswoman to run the most expensive champagne business globally. She made the first-ever rose champagne and introduced the riddling table technology to create clear Champagne.
In 1866, Madame Clicquot passed away. They registered their trademark, Yellow Label for the Champagne, in 1877. The company survived during World War I and World War II and slowly expanded the business in Asia and North America.
The brand became a part of the Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy group in 1987. It’s still one of the most renowned champagne houses globally, with a royal warrant given by the British Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.
