Created by Mount Gay Distilleries in Barbados, the rum is claimed to be the world’s oldest commercial rum distillery. The distillery produces a range of column- and pot-still rums. Mount Gay Rum is created using water that has been filtered through natural coral and then mixed with molasses. The fermentation of this mix is done using an exclusively selected natural yeast, and then it is distilled in both copper pot stills and column stills and then it is aged in oak barrels. Mount Gay Rum has historically been associated with sailing, and sailors have always preferred this particular rum as a drink.

Mount Gay Rum is named after Sir John Gay Alleyne, who became the company manager in the mid-1700s. His tenure was so effective, and he earned such a widely respected reputation as a business manager and community leader that the company was renamed in his honor after his death in 1801.
