Hardy Cognac is run by the fifth generation of the founder Antoine Hardy, an English man who was an ardent lover of France. The company is renowned for its refined cognacs packed in elegant decanters designed by the French crystal maker Lalique.
The History behind Hardy Cognac
An English gentleman who fell in love with the Cognac region in France, Anthony Hardy, found Hardy Cognac. He was a wine and spirit merchant who moved to France in 1863 and founded the Maison Hardy. He adopted the French cockerel as the emblem of his company and even changed his name to the gallic form of his Christian name, Antoine Hardy.
The company made fine champagne, which became very popular in 1869, where it was awarded the diploma of excellence at the Amsterdam exhibition. They portrayed the quality of the Cognac to the nectar of the gods.
Later, the company was hard hit by an insect, phylloxera blight, which caused havoc in the France wine-producing areas. However, since Anthony Hardy had an abundance of harvest, he could survive this period, producing fine quality cognac from its reserves.
The business slowly started flourishing in the international market, especially in the Eastern and Northern regions of Europe. His son, Armand Hardy, continued running his family’s business until 1957.
Later, his three sons, Philippe, Jacques, and Francis, took charge of the company, with Jacques Hardy being the managing director, exporting the cognacs to North America, South America, and Africa.
The company became popular after the death of Jacques Hardy, where they released a special limited edition Grande Champagne Cognac. They bottled it in a Caryota Carafe designed by Marie-Claude Lalique. Each bottle had the signature of Benedicte Hardy, who was the direct descendant of Antoine Hardy.
