About Courvoisier Cognac

This premium French cognac brand was started in the year 1828 by Emmanuel Courvoisier. It is one of the elegant French grape cognacs which has stood the test of time against revolutions and World Wars from the Napoleon Bonaparte Era. It is owned by the Japanese spirit company Beam Suntory.

The History behind Courvoisier Cognac

When Napoleon Bonaparte became the first emperor of France after the French Revolution, Emmanuel Courvoisier and Louise Gallois, the mayor of Bercy, opened a wine and spirit company on the outskirts of Paris. The location was close to the river Seine.

The spirit company was first started in 1809 and soon became a popular entity in the region where even Napoleon Bonaparte visited the warehouse. When he was exiled, he took several casks of Cognac, which were later named ‘The Brandy of Napoleon.’

The sons of the respective founders shifted their warehouse from Bercy to Jarnac, which is the heart of Cognac. The nephews, Curlier Brothers, later succeeded the company in 1866.

The brand continued to grow with acclaimed laurels such as honoring the Royal Chambers of Denmark, England, and Sweden and the heir to Napoleon Bonaparte, Napoleon III.

Courvoisier Cognac was the official drink at the Toast of the Grand Opening of the Eiffel Tower in 1889. The brand soon became one of the iconic cognac brands from the year 1909. In addition, it was the favorite drink of British Novelist Charles Dickens.

In the year 1983, this was the only Cognac house to receive the Prestige de la France title. They soon came up with an innovative blending of cognacs to create plenty of the rarest cognacs in the world.
